Summary: "The Early Word: The Cost of Going Negative"

In the 2008 Presidential Election, Senator John McCain has been using negative campaigning against his opponent. Although McCain was hoping for a positive result from his advertisements, polls say that if the election was now, Obama would win by 14%. Meanwhile, Obama's focus in his campaigning has been about political issues such as: racial identity, the tough economic times that the U.S. is facing. Neither candidates really address the issue of race, however they differ on how they would fix the economic problem. McCain says he wants to "clean up the mess of corruption, infighting and selfishness in Washington,” and he would do this by making tax cuts on capital gains and withdrawels from the people 59 and older, with bigger write offs for stock loss and a tax waiver for unemployment benefits. Obama on the other hand, says he wants to make tax cuts for the middle class and low -wage workers, while increasing spending for public works to create more jobs. Through this he says he will be offering his “steady hand of leadership."
